YouTube - it’s an education

When the Year 8 students at Eltham College are not immersed in the plays of Shakespeare or the poetry of William Blake, they can be found studying the videos of YouTube. In fact not only are they dissecting the fare on the world’s most popular video-sharing website, they’re creating their own mini movies and uploading them onto the site. That’s the same YouTube that has been blocked by many schools here and around the world, including those in the NSW public school system. So does exposing a bunch of 14-year-olds to the sometimes rough and raucous world of internet videos count as education?

MySpace revenues to boom

According to Barron’s, Pali Research analyst Richard Greenfield has estimated MySpace’s monthly U.S. revenue to be around $24 million, and $6 million globally. That’s a tidy $30 million per month for the U.S.’s number one social networking site.MySpace’s monthly revenues could more than double over the next year at “very high incremental revenue margins”. Rupert Murdoch’s initial investment of $500 million certainly seems to have paid off. However, there is no indication of where the revenues are coming from but it could include music and film/TV tie ups, as well as advertising.On the flipside, Greenfield refers to New Corp’s launch of Fox News Business Channel which, he says, could lose $75 million or more in the first year.
